It has been 30 years since the original Toy Story movie was released, establishing the animation giant as a leading animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared recently, offering a brief look into the storyline but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

In the teaser shows the young girl — who received Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer avoids is why the sheriff is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. The clip displays the badge pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the key figure among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
