Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal toward Spectators
The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
Recent Issues and Media Attention
The incident follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a central figure in a Netflix documentary that examined his influence in developing the Cowboys into the globe’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.
